This week: Woodkid & Nils Frahm, nonkeen, Jeff Beck, Biffy Clyro

Woodkid & Nils Frahm – Ellis (08/07/2016 – Erased Tapes Records) – (EP/Collaboration)

Yet again more Europeans attempting to infiltrate black matter. Yet again with a piano. But this time I enjoyed the trance. It didn’t feel like it was trying to entice me but I followed anyway. Robert De Niro’s trying-to-get-on-the-boat spoken-word catapulted me into an early-twentieth-century immigrant epoch. Make what you will of that. (8/10)

nonkeen – Oddments of the Gamble (15/07/2016 – R&S Records)

Nils Frahm can’t go a day without music. Sounds like most of humanity, really. This was more aggressive than its predecessor which was needed from a Frahm record. From this year anyway. Also more rugged, more robust, more messy than anything else I’ve heard from him and his multiple crews [so far] this year. (7/10)

Jeff Beck – Loud Hailer (15/07/2016 – ATCO Records)

The great mechanic is back. I mean mechanic in every sense of the word – doing the job as quickly and as loudly as he can. A wonderful technician who I’d wish would add more soul to proceedings. But with most competent mechanics there’s a job to be done with very little thinking involved. He just does it. (6/10)

Biffy Clyro – Ellipsis (08/07/2016 – 14th Floor Records/Warner Bros. Records Inc.)

It’s the Muse effect – fake semi-prog pop that’s so catchy you have to rethink why you love/hate it so much. Then you hear “I’m just a fucking animal!” and rethink the entire existence of modern pop culture in musical form. I didn’t say I wouldn’t listen once or twice more, though. (5/10)
