This week: Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles – Amnesty (I) (19/08/2016 – Fiction Records/Casablanca Records)

I’ll be honest, I’ve never gotten around to the previous output, which is probably why I like this so much. Alice Glass might as well be Philip Glass for all I care. The beats are repetitively dank and obviously fuzzy with distant Ethan Frances vocals meeting the fuzz with studio-production guile and wispy/grainy deliverance. Is she trying too hard? Absolutely. If I knew what Alice Glass had to offer I’d probably hate it. Yeah I get why the crits and [some] fanboys hate it, but I was gagging for some dirty house for a long time. With the up-and-down year of sycophantic electronica, it’s nice to see some disco dilettantes pushing the boat out somewhat. Not too far from the pier, though. (8/10)
