Weekly Capsule Reviews: 13/08/2017

This week: Randy Newman

Randy Newman: Dark Matter [Nonesuch, 04/08/2017]

In the grand scheme of things, levity is needed, and is just. But predicating it on the themes of the current sociopolitical landscape (and ever since these themes were in vogue to begin with) might be playing it safe, some might say trite (including yours truly). Newman, in religious terms (and maybe in sociopolitical terms, also), doesn’t have faith but recognises it as a “giant popular force”. Religion is an easy target and topic for discussion; so’s climate change, so’s evolution, so’s Putin, and so’s those love songs. But take the most satirical songwriters in all of the world, we still choose him. (8/10)
