Weekly Capsule Reviews: 17/09/2017

This week: The National, The War on Drugs, Oh Sees

The National: Sleep Well Beast [4AD, 08/09/2017]

Like all the dirges I adore, there’s always light at the end of the translucent tunnel. Matt Berninger is at his least meaningful when the questions he’s raising he knows he won’t get an answer for, naturally: “The day I die, the day I die/Where will we be?”—he doesn’t know, we don’t know, yet he’s got to ask them anyway. But when he’s resigned to the fact he/we won’t know in this lifetime, we get gems like “Nobody Else Will Be There” and “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness”, because he can’t explain it any other way. (8/10)

The War on Drugs: A Deeper Understanding [Atlantic, 25/08/2017]

Fuzz-rock emulating the haze of uncertainty and encumbered by his self-cultivated pain, he’s slow to the point in his Springsteen pastiche. (6/10)

Oh Sees: Orc [Castle Face (self-released), 25/08/2017]

Could be the most overrated thing to come out of a garage since The Homer. (5/10)
